The 34 mile rail trail corridor is a great place to start.  Surrounding the rail trail are many recreational activities including hiking, camping, swimming paddling, and cycling.  The Adirondack Rail Trail map can point you in the right direction.

Year Round Recreation

The Adirondack Rail Trail offers great recreation opportunities year round.  There are numerous trails off of the rail trail for snowshoeing, cross country skiing, hiking, cycling, and running.  Portage trails offer great options for immersing yourself in nature.  Winter is a great time to observe nature.  It is always fun to see the tracks left behind from otters and foxes.

Adirondack Rail Trail History

The   Adirondack Railroad was built by Seward Webb (spouse of Lila Vanderbilt Webb)  with service beginning in 1892.  The New York Central bought the line and expanded services.  People came from NYC to Saranac Lake to visit or to spend the summer at their summer camps.  In recent years the train operated as a scenic railroad.  The rail ties were removed starting in 2022.
